Ukadiche Modak

Ganpati Bappa Morya🌺 The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is approaching & it's also 'Modak' time, those steamed sweet dumplings, the most favourite of the diety. Modak is derived from the Sanskrit word 'mod' which means 'happiness' and 'modak' means 'true happiness'. So in today's recipe we have 'Ukadiche Modak' (steamed sweet dumplings, commonly known as 'Ukadiche Modak'). There are different methods of preparing Ukadiche Modak. But let's try the simple one for the beginners & those in hurry burry.

Preparation time : 1 hour for the whole process (depends on the quantity you make)

Course : It is an Indian dessert


Equipment :
1) Steamer or Idli cooker.
2) Modak mould (optional) can also pleat the modak with fingertips.

Ingredients for outer cover/ outer layer of Modak :
1) rice flour-1 cup


2) Ghee -1 tbsp
3) salt to taste
4) water 1 cup

Ingredients for filling :
1) Grated jaggery - 3/4 cup

2) Grated fresh coconut - 1 cup

3) Cardamom Powder - 1/4 teaspoon
4) Nutmeg Powder - 1 pinch (Optional)

5) Ghee - 1 teaspoon

(You can add white sesame, dry cashew nuts, almonds, poppy seeds, etc. to the filling to make it protein-rich, but it's fully optional)

Method :
1) Boil the water by adding one, tablespoon of Ghee and pinch of salt.

2) In a plate take the rice flour and pour in the boiled water. Mix it well with spoon and keep it aside for 5 minutes until cool.



3) Place a PAN on gas flame. Add 1 tbsp ghee, grated coconut and greater jaggery. Mix it well and cook for 5 minutes. Lastly, add cardamom powder to it. Give a stir and turn off the flame.

Note : If you want to add dry fruits and stuff. Then add it to the Ghee before adding coconut. Fry for a minute and then continue with the
process.

4) Now knead the rice flour well until it gets into a moist and soft dough.



5) Start making modaks. First Apply oil/ ghee to your Palm.

6) Make lemon sized balls of the dough and press it to make puris (either can be done by fingertips or by rolling pin) and give it a
shape of small bowl.

Tips : For the outer layer to be moist, smooth and for easy pleating of the outer layer, just add 1 tbsp of corn starch to the Rice flour while
cooking.

7) Add coconut filling to it and make pleates using finger tips. Bring all the plates together and seal it by giving it a good shape.



8) Grease oil to the steamer and place modaks on it and steam for 15 minutes.



9) After 15 minutes 'Ukadiche Modak' are ready to relish.



Serving Tips : Just open up the modak, pour some ghee on it and enjoy.

4) Jaggery contains antioxidants, minerals, and it is also a good source of iron.
