'Panchkhadya'

Ganesh chaturthi special 'Panchkhadya' is a traditional sweet of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. It is a blend of five ingredients, occasionally prepared during the festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri etc.... Panchkhadya as the name says 'Panch' means five and 'Khadya' means food, so Panchkhadya is a mixture of 5 ingredients favourite of Lord Ganesha. It is offered to Lord Ganesha and distributed as prasada after Aarti.

Panchkhadya

Every region has its own version of preparing Panchkhadya. So let's try one of those.

Puffed paddy/ layo Panchkhadya.

Ingredients:

1) Puffed Paddy/ Layo - 500 grams

2) Whole Green Gram/ Green Moong - 1/2 cup 

3) White sesame seeds - 1/2 cup

4) Fresh grated coconut -  1 cup

5) Grated jaggery - 3/4 cup

Method:

1) Dry roast the green gram on low flame till it changes it's colour a bit.

2) Dry roast sesame seeds for 2 minutes.

3)Grind the roasted green gram coarsely on pulse mode (don't make fine powder). Clean it by winnowing till the skin of green gram separates. Discard the skin.

4) Take a mixing bowl add grated coconut and jaggery to it and mix well, add roasted sesame and green gram to it and mix well again. Lastly add puffed paddy an combine all ingredients by mixing it again.

The Panchkhadya of Puffed Paddy is ready. Offer it to Lord Ganesha as naivedya and grant his blessings.
